What are Qigong and Yoga?

Qigong

Qigong is an ancient practice that is a balance of movement and meditation. Its roots came from Classical Chinese Medicine. This practice aims to reach health, vitality, and strength, and unlock maximum human potential.

Yoga

Yoga is a spiritual practice that concentrates on generating harmony between mind and body. This aims to reach good health. The word 'Yoga' originated from the Sanskrit 'Yuj', which means 'to join' or 'to unite

What is the similarity between Qigong and Yoga?

Qigong and Yoga are powerful practices with roots coming from ancient civilizations. These two practices come from two different cultures; however, they synthesize very well because these two cultures share knowledge. Both of these practices aim to cultivate health and vitality and awaken human potential.

These exercises help in harmonizing energy, which benefits the body by providing good health and releasing blockages and negative emotions such as stress.

Since these practices share knowledge, a lot of the teachings in these practices are similar. For example, both of these practices have energy centers and energy channels. Another is that both of these practices incorporate 5 Elements in their teachings. Also, both of these practices use sounds or sound vibrations. Even though the concepts are similar, their point of view is still unique. Let’s try to dig into this deeper.

Qigong and Yoga Energy centers

Yoga Energy Centers

In yoga, the energy centers are called Chakra. In Sanskrit, Chakra means energy centers or “wheel”. Chakras are found along the body’s central channel or the spine. There are 7 Chakras commonly known in yoga which are: Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Solar Plexus, Heart Chakra, Throat Chakra, Third Eye Chakra, and Crown Chakra.

Qigong Energy Centers

In Qigong, the energy centers are the 3 Dantians. The 3 Dantians are Lower Dantian, Middle Dantian, and Upper Dantian. The 3 Dantians hold our life source, energy, and spirit.

Lower Dantian

The Lower Dantian has located 3 fingers below the navel, and then 3 knuckles going in. It holds our life force or essence. In qigong, we call this essence Jing. We acquire this through genes and is very similar to DNA. It is important to connect to the Lower Dantian and store energy in the Lower Dantian during qigong practice.

Middle Dantian

The Middle Dantian is located in the middle of the torso, behind the sternum. It holds our energy or qi. The Middle Dantian helps nourish the viscera. When we have enough qi, we can cultivate Shen or Spirit.

Upper Dantian

The Upper Dantian is located in the center of the brain, within the Pineal Gland. In qigong I,t is identified as a mud pill. In the Upper Dantian the Shen or Spirit is cultivated into Wu Wei (emptiness or infinite). It is associated with consciousness, awareness, awakening, the third eye intellect, decision-making, and many more.

Qigong and Yoga Energy channels

Yoga Energy Channels

In yoga, the energy channels are called NadisThere are about 72,000 Nadis. However, 3 Nadis are the most important and commonly used. These 3 are the CenterLeft, and Right.

Life energy or prana circulated in the Nadis. The flow of prana in these energy centers greatly affects the person's overall health.

Qigong Energy Channels

Meridians are energy channels where blood and qi flow in our bodies. There are 59 meridians in the body. The most commonly spoken of are the 20 meridians which include the 12 standard meridians and the 8 extraordinary meridians.

The Standard Meridians:

The 12 standard meridians separate into 6 Yin (Zang) and 6 Yang (Fu)  meridians which connect to a specific organ.

The 12 Standard Meridians
  1. Kidney
  2. Liver
  3. Lungs
  4. Spleen
  5. Heart
  6. Bladder
  7. Gallbladder
  8. Large Intestines
  9. Stomach
  10. Small Intestines
  11. Pericardium
  12. Triple Warmer

The Extraordinary Meridians

Unlike the Standard Meridians, The 8 extraordinary meridians do not connect to a specific organ. The main function of these meridians is to connect and interact with the 12 standard meridians.

The 8 Extraordinary Meridians:
  1.  Du Mai (Governing Vessel)
  2. Ren Mai (Conception Vessel
  3. Chong Mai (Thrusting Vessel)
  4. Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel)
  5. Yangchiao Mai (Yang Heel Vessel)
  6. Yinchiao Mai (Yin Heel Vessel)
  7. Yangwei Mai (Yang Linking Vessel)
  8. Yinwei Mai (Yin Linking Vessel)

5 Elements

Both systems have 5 elements. In yoga, the 5 elements are Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and, Space (Ether). In Qigong, based on the Chinese Medicine and Daoist perspective, the naturally occurring elements in nature are Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, and Metal. The 5 elements in Chinese Medicine also connect to a specific organ.

Qigong and Yoga Healing Sounds and Vibrations

Yoga Healing Sounds and Vibrations

In yoga, they use Mantras. One of the most common mantras is the Om (ॐ) sound which is believed to be the sound of the universe. These mantras can also be complete sentences. Mantras are chanted to help circulate the life energy (Prana) through the energy channels (Nadis). It also aids in awakening and reaching a calmer state of being.

Qigong Healing Sounds and Vibrations

In Qigong, we use the 6 Healing Sounds. Each 6 Healing Sounds associate with a specific organ and element.

6 Healing Sounds:
  1. Ha – Heart / Fire Element
  2. Ssi – Lungs / Metal Element
  3. Chway - Kidney / Water Element
  4. Whoo – Spleen / Earth Element
  5. Shoo – Liver / Wood Element
  6. Shee – Triple Burner

In Chinese Medicine, our organs are associated with a specific emotion and vice versa. These healing sounds help release negative emotions as well as cultivate energy. The emphasis of using these 6 Healing Sounds is more on healing rather than attaining awakening. It can be used while doing qigong and can be used in many different ways depending on the needs or state of the person.

What are the differences between Qigong and Yoga?

In more recent years, yoga has become more popular, especially in the west. Qigong is now just slowly growing in popularity, as modern people are keener to discover more practices providing optimal benefits.

Another difference if Qigong and Yoga are the techniques and purpose. Qigong concentrates more on grounding, cultivating, and storing the energy to promote healing and physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. While Yoga concentrates more on “ascension” or “enlightenment” or Samadhi.

In yoga, they use a lot of upside-down poses and upside-down poses with both the upper body and lower body. The movement in yoga or more poses is held in different degrees.

In qigong, the practice is more on connecting to Heaven (Unive Earth energy. The stances in qigong assist in rooting and connecting to the energy of heaven and earth. These stances enable the practitioner to the ground to the earth but at the same time still, be able to connect to the energy of heaven. Movements in qigong also have more flow compared to yoga. In Qigong, movements are connected continuously.

In Qigong, we can also hold a pose, but the purpose is different. One example is in the 5 Element Qigong, we hold the pose at the peak of the movement with the inhalation to help permeate Qi that goes into the organ as we do qigong. We hold poses in yoga to help reach physical, mental, and spiritual development.
